International Dance Day

In 1982 the Dance Committee of the ITI founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29th April, anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet.

The intention of the «International Dance Day Message» is to celebrate dance, to revel in the universality of this art form, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and bring people together with a common language – dance.

In Norway we have celebrated this UNESCO day since 1999 and Dance Information Norway is the national coordinator for the celebration. We have a range of tasks in connection to the International Dance Day, for example arranging the project Dance in the city, performances and open rehearsals at Scenehuset and the official opening in Oslo. We also produce a national program with an overview of all activities nation wide. In addition we select an ambassador every year and produce the official “Dance Day Dance”.
